Our Story …

We are really pleased to announce that we're taking part in Shitbox Rally in 2018!! Shitbox Rally is the largest community lead fundraiser for the Cancer Council's in Australia and is now in its 9th year. Part of the participation is that all teams have to raise a minimum of $4,000 but most teams raise well above this amount as you can see with the $1,400,000 target. These funds go to the Cancer Council and we are extremely proud to be doing our part to support such a worthy charity. The fundraising is the hard part, so any donation you can give is greatly appreciated. Please make sure to follow our progress via the blog post below and our facebook event page here :-https://www.facebook.com/events/1665911136800280/

Here's what I'm doing …

Shitbox Rally is the adventure of a lifetime challenging participants and their cars, worth no more than $1,000, over a 7 day across Australia endeavour to raise money for cancer research.

The rally is not a race – it’s a fun, colourful, unpredictable adventure with participants travelling at their own pace in smaller groups. Vehicles often break down but “we never leave anyone behind” and each night is spent camping beneath the stars and celebrating the day’s achievements. It all adds up to an incredible opportunity to see Australia’s vast and beautiful countryside and make lifelong friends, many brought together after experiencing cancer themselves or seeing cancer impact family and friends.

Since it’s inception the rally has been the largest fundraiser for the Cancer Council nationally."

Roy managed to rescue an old Mercedes from rusting away in a paddock.

Lets hope it holds together for the event :-)

We are both looking forward to doing our bit to raise some funds for cancer research.

Some more details on the car we hope to use :-

It is a Mercedes 380SE and had been sitting in a paddock unloved for 12 years before Roy spotted it. He secured a deal with the owners and arranged to pick it up.

When he arrived with a car trailer to collect it, it looked as though the tyres were all flat, but on closer inspection, they had actually sunk into the ground through prolonged wet weather.

The car had to be winched/dragged onto the trailer as all the brake calipers has seized.

When he attempted to get the engine to fire up, the only way he could get it to go was to squirt fuel directly down the throttle body, but it would soon die again. In an attempt to sort that out, he fitted a new fuel pump only to discover that the fuel distributor had failed.

He is currently in the process of overhauling the fuel distributor - lets hope the old girl fires up and keeps running once he has done that!

I am glad Roy is a mechanic and can figure these things out - else we would probably blow our $1000 cap for car and repair costs.

More details to follow.

T - 2 Months, the excitement is building.

Today marks the second fundraising goal set by the organisers and I am pleased to say that thanks to the generosity of everybody, we have met that milestone. Please continue to spread the word as next months goal is a big one so we will need all the help we can get.

We (Linda and myself Paul) are continuing to sell stuff on ebay and gumtree which didn't sell at out garage sale a few weeks ago - so a good trickle of funds there.

I have also organised a fund raising bike ride for a group of 10 friends and work colleagues on 21/22 April. We will be riding the 160km long Brisbane Valley Rail Trail over 2 days - quite looking forward to that.

The Impact, Outcomes & Charity

Shitbox Rally is a dedicated fundraising event for cancer research with funds going to Cancer Council.

Cancer Council is one of the largest non-government funders of cancer research in Australia. We conduct and fund research studies across all cancers and all stages of the cancer journey.

Thanks to the community funds raised such as Shitbox Rally we can fund world-class research that reduces the impact of cancer for everyone.

Over $13 million has been raised by Box Rallies to date, supporting ground-breaking projects such as:

  • A research study to develop a vaccine that protects against lymphoma cancers.
  • A research trial to standardise international guidelines on melanoma removal.
  • A research grant to revolutionise the treatment of pancreatic cancer.

These projects wouldn’t be possible without your support.
